IT guru calls out Electoral Commission over exposure of BVR kits serial numbers

An Information Technology (IT) expert and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy Director of IT, Yayra Koku, has called out the Electoral Commission (EC) for exposing the serial number on the commission’s Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits which are being used in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

The BVR kits, according to Koku, can be compromised if their serial numbers fall into the hands of cybercriminals. He mentioned phishing attacks and data compromises as some of the harm that can be done to the kits when hackers get hold of their serial numbers.

“The serial numbers are BOLDLY printed on the BVR kits. How can something that could lead to a phishing attack be displayed openly at registration centres?

“How can something (a serial number) that can cause a cyber-attack on BVRs and compromise data integrity be displayed at registration centres?” Koku asked.

The IT expert cum politician indicated that the NDC would do whatever it takes to have a record of the serial numbers of all BVR kits the commission is using in the ongoing registration exercise which started on Tuesday, May 7. This, according to him, will help in auditing the process at a later time.

“…. Know that we will continue to compile serial numbers for all BVR kits used in this limited registration for auditing purposes, and we will expose you if you try anything FISHY,” he concluded.
