Institute human rights action against the police officers – RMV to Minority

A pressure group, “Respect My Vote” has urged the minority in parliament to institute a human rights action against police personnel over unprofessionalism.

The minority in parliament yesterday 22nd December 2020 marched from parliament house to the Electoral Commission Office to present a petition on the disputed Techiman south seat but were met with brutal force from some police personnel trying to prevent them on their way.

The minority succeed in bulldozing their way but were again not granted entry to the EC’s office by the police.

However, the minority then returned to parliament and collated the results of Techiman south using the pink sheets on a live telecast. Videos of the disgusting and embarrassing incident on social media have received negative reactions across the globe. This did not sit well with the “Respect My Vote” Movement, compelling them to today issue a press statement encouraging the minority to take action against the police who engaged in using brutal force on the honorable Members of parliament.

They also called a parliament to haul before the house the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. James Oppong Boanuh to answer to the actions of the police who exercised that level of unprofessional act.

The said, “Respect My Vote Movement condemns in no uncertain terms the disgusting and contemptuous treatment meted to Honourable Members of Parliament who marched to the offices of the Electoral Commission on Tuesday 22nd December 2020.

Videos of the incidents that went viral show how overzealous police officers tried to prevent Members of Parliament from presenting their petition to the Electoral Commission.

We are urging the leadership of the minority in parliament to institute a human rights action against the police officers including the officers who supervised yesterday’s unprofessional conduct on the part of the police and ensure that the culprits are brought to book.

The IGP must also be hauled before Parliament to answer questions on yesterday’s harassment of members of Parliament”.

Treatment Meted Out to Members of Parliament by Police, Electoral Commission Embarrassing

Accra, 23rd December, 2020 Respect My Vote Movement condemns in no uncertain terms the disgusting and contemptuous treatment meted to Honourable Members of Parliament who marched to the offices of the Electoral Commission on Tuesday 22nd December 2020.

Videos of the incidents that went viral show how overzealous police officers tried to prevent Members of Parliament from presenting their petition to the Electoral Commission.

Electoral Commission officials also failed to come out and receive the petition from the Honourable Members of Parliament citing short notice.

We are urging the leadership of the minority in parliament to institute a human rights action against the police officers including the officers who supervised yesterday’s unprofessional conduct on the part of the police and ensure that the culprits are brought to book.

The IGP must also be hauled before Parliament to answer questions on yesterday’s harassment of members of Parliament.

We are calling on Jean Mensa to publicly apologize to the members for the disrespect shown them yesterday.

In the absence of that minority MPs must ensure that they reject any Constitutional Instrument brought to Parliament by the Electoral Commission. We further urge the MPs to reject budgetary allocations to the Electoral Commission.

The arrogance of Jean Mensa and the leadership of the EC is out of hand and must be met with commensurate measure.
