300% increase in Chiefs’ allowances, GH₵7b paid to contractors – Gov’t

Volta Regional House of Chiefs has received assurances from government on strengthened support for traditional authorities and accelerated infrastructure development across the country.

The assurances were given during an engagement at the Volta Regional House of Chiefs following the commissioning and handing over of the Adaklu Traditional Council Building.

The delegation was led by the Volta Regional Minister and included the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim; his Deputy, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah; the Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Governs Kwame Agbodza; as well as all 18 Municipal and District Chief Executives in the Volta Region.

Addressing the chiefs, Hon. Governs Kwame Agbodza disclosed that government has settled nearly GH₵7 billion in outstanding payments owed to contractors. He noted that this decisive intervention by John Dramani Mahama demonstrates strong national leadership and has restored confidence in the construction sector. He added that the President has directed that all road projects nationwide be completed by December 2027.

Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim emphasized that national development cannot be achieved without the active involvement of traditional authorities. He announced a 300 percent increase in allowances for chiefs and called for closer collaboration between government and traditional leaders to ensure the successful implementation of the 24-hour economy policy.

The engagement reaffirmed government’s commitment to moving beyond symbolic recognition of chieftaincy institutions to their full integration into governance and development, with a renewed pledge to strengthen partnerships with traditional authorities to drive development across the Volta Region.
