I was testing the gun — Adventist SHS student opens fire, injures 2 in Kumasi

A disturbing shooting incident has rocked the campus of the Seventh Day Adventist Senior High School in Bantama, Ashanti Region, on Friday, April 4, 2025, leaving two students seriously injured and raising concerns about security in Ghanaian schools.

According to multiple eyewitnesses and reliable sources within the school, the violence unfolded during the school’s break time when a Form Two student, Bernard Amoabeng, reportedly pulled out a gun he had brought to school.

“There was an argument among some of the students. They were debating whether the gun Bernard had was real or fake,” a student who witnessed the incident told reporters on condition of anonymity.

“He kept insisting it was real, but some doubted him.”

In an apparent effort to prove the weapon was functional, Amoabeng allegedly fired it.

“He said, ‘I was testing the gun,’ right before pulling the trigger,” the eyewitness added.

The gunfire struck two students, leaving one — identified only as Penamang — in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the forehead.
School authorities immediately rushed her to the Kwadaso Hospital, but due to the gravity of her injury, she was transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for advanced treatment.

The second student, whose name is yet to be disclosed, sustained injuries but remains in stable condition, according to hospital sources.

Police in Suame swiftly moved in and arrested Amoabeng at the scene. Officers confirmed that a full-scale investigation has begun to determine how the student obtained the firearm and whether there are deeper security lapses within the school system.

Preliminary background checks on Bernard Amoabeng suggest he had no prior disciplinary record.

However, some students say he had previously bragged about having access to weapons — though no one took the claims seriously until now.
