A young Ghanaian, Nana Agyei, a first-year Electrical Engineering (Adaptronic) student at Riga Technical University, enrolled in July 2024 and died on June 4, 2025.
The authorities in Latvia initially alleged that Nana Agyei died by suicide after jumping from his hostel apartment. However, subsequent information indicates that the suicide account does not reflect what truly happened.
According to his parents, about seven months after gaining admission to the university, he began reporting to them back home in Ghana that he was experiencing severe racism.
The late Nana is said to have claimed that he was racially abused even during lectures, and on several occasions, he returned to his hostel to find his room ransacked. As these incidents continued, he informed his parents of his desire to return home to Ghana. His parents agreed and advised him to complete his semester examinations before returning.
At some point, he met five Latvian citizens who were also students, namely Anthonio Guerra, Doctor Aggure, Julia Moutenar, Alajoudro, and Licue Moutenio, who initially appeared kind, and he became friends with them.
He later invited them to his hostel. Nana Agyei told his mother that before visiting, they asked him whether he was alone. During their visit, they offered him a drink, and after the supposed friends left, he began experiencing severe stomach upset. He rushed to his roommate, who was in the next room, and asked him to call the police as he narrated the incident.
Upon arrival at the hospital, doctors revealed that the drink his friends offered him contained harmful substances.
Nana then called his mother and narrated what had happened while he was at the hospital, after which the mother requested that he write down the names of those “friends.”
Fortunately, he was able to document the names of the five individuals involved and included them in his medical report. However, after learning that Nana Agyei had survived the poisoning, these individuals allegedly returned to his hostel and assaulted him, leading to his death.
Cover-up by the Latvian Authorities
Initially, Nana Agyei’s parents were told that their son had committed suicide, which surprised them, as they had not heard from their child again after the poisoning incident. The last time they heard from him was when he sent a voice note while at the hospital.
At some point, the mother called his phone, and a police officer answered and broke the news of his death by suicide.
The parents later traveled to Latvia in the company of officials from Ghana’s Embassy in Germany and requested the autopsy report, his phone, and CCTV footage from his apartment. However, the authorities refused to release these vital documents, leading to clear suspicion of murder.
The parents have therefore petitioned Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which has today announced a full-scale investigation to uncover the truth.
The question now is WILL NANA AGYEI GET JUSTICE?
