How Akufo-Addo escaped death in fatal accident involving his convoy

The Office of the President of Ghana has released a statement explaining how President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo escaped unscathed when several vehicles in his convoy were involved in a fatal accident.

Many vehicles in the President’s convoy were involved in a fatal accident at the Bunso-Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway on Sunday, May 19. The accident claimed the life of one of the drivers with several members of the President’s close security detail suffering various degrees of injuries.

President Akufo-Addo was in Kumasi for a series of events over the weekend. His convoy was returning to the national capital following the conclusion of their activities in the Ashanti Region when the accident happened.

However, President Akufo-Addo escaped the accident because he was not with the convoy at the time of the incident. The President travelled via a military aircraft from Kumasi to Accra.

On Sunday, 19th May 2024, several vehicles belonging to the President’s convoy were involved in a fatal accident along the Bunso-Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway.

The unfortunate incident occurred whilst the convoy was on its way back from Kumasi, after accompanying the President to Kumasi for a series of events this weekend. Tragically, one of the drivers, Mr. Kwesi Atta, has lost his life.

Additionally, several close protection and police officers from the President’s security detail have sustained varying degrees of injuries, and received initial treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital.

The injured persons are currently being evacuated to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for further treatment and observation.

Several vehicles in the convoy have also been completely wrecked as a result of the accident.

Fortunately, the President is safe and unharmed, as he travelled to Accra via military aircraft. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured officers. Further details will be communicated as we continue to assess the situation.

We appreciate your understanding and support during this difficult time.
