The Accra High Court has dismissed an application filed by Democracy Hub seeking to stop the March 3 Ayawaso East by-election.

The court declined to quash the Electoral Commission’s (EC) recognition of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Mr. Baba Jamal, despite allegations of vote-buying during the party’s parliamentary primary.

Democracy Hub had prayed the court to restrain the EC from proceeding with the by-election and to nullify the Commission’s acceptance of Mr. Jamal as the duly nominated candidate of the NDC.

The group argued that alleged irregularities, including claims of inducement during the primary, undermined the legitimacy of the candidate’s nomination.

However, the court dismissed the application, effectively clearing the way for the EC to conduct the by-election as scheduled on March 3.

The Electoral Commission has maintained that it acted in accordance with the law in accepting the nomination of the candidate presented by the NDC.

The Ayawaso East by-election is expected to take place today, Monday, March 3, to elect a Member of Parliament for the constituency.
