Professor Ransford Gyampo of the University of Ghana has condemned the recent attack on former Awutu Senya East MP Hawa Koomson during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

Speaking on The Key Points on TV3, Prof. Gyampo acknowledged that Koomson’s controversial political past may have angered many, but emphasized that “two wrongs don’t make a right.”

“Hawa Koomson shouldn’t have been allowed near the voting centre because of her history,” he said. “But regardless of what she’s done in the past, we cannot take the law into our own hands.”

Security analyst Dr. Ishmael Norman also weighed in, blaming the Ghana Police Service for failing to anticipate the violence.

He urged the IGP to identify and sanction officers who failed in their duties and called for the arrest and prosecution of those who assaulted Koomson.

During the rerun, chaos erupted at the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station. Armed thugs reportedly stormed the venue, attacking several people, including Koomson, who was kicked while on the ground until police intervened. A JoyNews journalist was also assaulted while filming the incident.

The rerun was held in 19 polling stations following a court-ordered annulment of results in those areas. The race between NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn and NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh remains tight, with only 48 votes separating the two from the earlier collation.
