Accra, Aug. 28, GNA – The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has refuted claims circulating on social media alleging that it replaced the traditional greetings “Woezor” and “Akwaba” on the newly refurbished signage at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park with the term “Oobakɛ”.

In a statement issued in Accra, the Authority described the allegation, widely shared on Instagram as false and misleading, urging the public to disregard it.

“We wish to categorically state that at no point has the GTA ordered or approved the replacement of the culturally significant greetings ‘Woezor’ (in Ewe) and ‘Akwaba’ (in Akan) with ‘Oobakɛ ,” the statement said.

‘Oobakɛ’, in the Ga Language, means ‘welcome’.

According to the GTA, the inscriptions “Woezor” and “Akwaba” remain intact and are preserved as part of Ghana’s diverse and respected cultural heritage.

The Authority further clarified that any changes to the signage at the park would require consultations with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and other relevant agencies.

“The GTA cannot replace or change the name on a signage at the Park without consultation or approval from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and in consultation with the agency in question,” the statement added.

The Authority emphasised that it had no knowledge of the alleged changes and had not issued any directive regarding the matter.

It called on the public and stakeholders to disregard the misinformation and continue supporting the KNMP as a national symbol of unity, heritage, and pride.

The Park, which recently underwent a major refurbishment, remains one of Ghana’s most significant historical landmarks and a key attraction for both domestic and international tourists.
