GPL: Clubs unaware of prize money

ASHFORDThe 2016/17 Ghana Premier League returns on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 with four matches to end the season.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Premier League Board (PLB) are still considering the prize money for this year’s league.

Last year the winner of the league took home $30,000 but the FA and PLB are yet to announce the prize money for the winner this year.

For the past two seasons, the prize money on the league has been fluctuating with AshantiGold taking home $13,500 in the 2014/15 season as League Champions. Wa All Stars were awarded with $30,000 last season.

These monies have been coming from the FA coffers and as to whether the $30,000 will be maintained or reduce is being considered.

On the other hand, the return of the league will be welcomed by a decider between league leaders, Aduana Stars and second placed, West Africa Football Academy (WAFA) in this week 27 fixture at the Agyeman Badu stadium in Dormaa.

The Ghana League went on a month break to pave way for the just ended WAFU Cup of Nations.

Aduana Stars is on top of the league with 48 points, followed by WAFA on 47 points, with just a point separating these two teams.

A win for Aduana Stars at home will see them stretch the lead on the league log to 51 points with three matches to spare, and will secure their spot at the top. A win for WAFA will also see them at the top with 50 points.

Aduana Stars are searching for their second league trophy.

Meanwhile, Accra Hearts of Oak will be hoping to secure a win against WA All Stars at the Malik Jabir Park. It is a must win game for the Phobians, as a slip will see them throw away their title ambitions. Hearts have accrued 44 points and lies third on the league log.

With four matches to end the season, Aduana Stars, WAFA and Hearts of Oak have some crucial fixtures to honour which will determine which club will win the 2016/17 Ghana Premier League.
