Gov’t sets up task force to relaunch Ghana’s national airline

The government is stepping up efforts to revive a national carrier by inaugurating a dedicated task force to fast-track the airline’s re-establishment. The move, directed by President John Dramani Mahama and led by the Ministry of Transport, aims to restore Ghana’s presence in the aviation industry after nearly two decades without a national airline.

Ghana Airways, the original flag carrier, operated from 1958 until its collapse in 2004 due to financial and operational challenges. It was followed by Ghana International Airlines, which ceased operations in 2010. Since then, Ghana has lacked a national carrier, limiting its visibility and competitiveness in the regional aviation space.

In September 2022, Ashanti Airlines was selected as the government’s strategic partner to support the airline’s revival. This renewed effort attracted interest from private investors and signaled a new chapter for the long-awaited rebranded ‘Ghana Airlines.’

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe stated that the government is actively seeking partnerships to implement the project. Given Ghana’s current fiscal limitations, private-sector investment and international collaboration will be essential in launching and sustaining the airline.

The newly formed task force will coordinate with stakeholders, drive policy alignment, and create a roadmap to ensure the airline’s successful re-launch. The goal is to boost investor confidence, improve connectivity, and reposition Ghana as a hub for regional travel and commerce.

As expectations rise, the task force’s progress will be closely watched by both industry insiders and the traveling public. If successful, the revival of the national airline could significantly enhance Ghana’s global aviation footprint.
