The government has cleared all outstanding arrears owed to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), amounting to GH¢603 million as of December 2024, according to Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
Announcing the milestone at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, the Minister said the full payment reflects the government’s dedication to improving healthcare financing and ensuring the sustainability of the scheme.
“This demonstrates our unwavering commitment to fulfilling financial obligations in the health sector.
No government has released funds to the National Health Insurance Fund as promptly as this one,” Akandoh stated.
He emphasized that payments are now made monthly from the Consolidated Fund, which has boosted service delivery and improved trust in the system.
The Minister further disclosed that over GH¢1.38 billion was disbursed by the NHIA to healthcare providers in just the first half of 2025, marking what he described as one of the most efficient phases in the authority’s operations.
