Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced plans to increase the monthly stipends of Ghanaian students studying abroad under government-sponsored programs.
This development aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by these students, enabling them to focus on their academic pursuits without undue stress.
Ablakwa’s announcement was made during his official visit to Cotonou, Benin, where he engaged with members of the Ghanaian diaspora. Although specific figures were not disclosed, Mr. Ablakwa assured that consultations would soon commence to review and enhance the current allowance structure.
In addition to the stipend increase, Mr Ablakwa pledged to ensure the timely disbursement of stipends, which have often been delayed, causing hardship for the students. Currently, Ghanaian students in Benin receive a monthly stipend of CFA 45,000 (approximately GHS 1,147), along with a one-time book allowance and medical expenses.
The students, however, expressed concerns about the recent reduction in the program’s duration from 12 months to six months. Mr Ablakwa’s engagement with the Ghanaian community in Cotonou marked the beginning of a new policy to engage with Ghanaians abroad on a quarterly basis and respond proactively to their concerns.
