In response to renewed violence in the northeast, the government has imposed a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and offensive weapons in Nalerigu and Bawku and their surrounding areas.
According to a statement issued by the Interior Ministry on Sunday, July 27, individuals found carrying weapons in these regions will face arrest and prosecution.
Curfew Imposed
The government has also introduced a curfew from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. in both Nalerigu and Bawku to maintain order and facilitate the evacuation of students from affected institutions. This move follows recent killings, including the tragic death of two students of Nalerigu SHS after gunmen stormed their school.
Military Deployment and Peace Enforcement
In light of escalating tensions, the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to enforce the curfew and restore calm. Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu noted that this marks a shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement, as the situation in the area worsens.
“We assure the public that the Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property,” the statement read.
Call for Restraint
Government appeals to chiefs, elders, youth, and residents to remain calm and use peaceful means to address disputes, especially those stemming from the ongoing chieftaincy conflict.
“Every life matters. The government remains committed to restoring peace and stability in these troubled areas,” the statement emphasized.
