President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) will be equipped with 50 new vehicles to enhance mobility of personnel.
According to President Mahama, while addressing parliament during the State of Nations Address (SONA), the commission of these new vehicles forms part of ensuring personnel carry out their duties while maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of civilians.
He mentioned that the initiative forms part of a broader program to retool the military and improve logistics across the services.
President Mahama noted that plans are underway to acquire two brand-new offshore patrol vessels, armored personnel carriers, protective gear, ammunition, vehicles, strategic drones, and advanced systems to enhance the operational capabilities of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
He stressed that the government will continue to prioritize human capital development within the Armed Forces; a progressive recruitment drive to increase the strength of the GAF by 12,000 personnel over 4 years to support expansion and operational demands is ongoing.
President Mahama reaffirmed the government’s resetting agenda, as the recruitment process has been decentralized to regional capitals, with selected recruits reporting directly from their regions to training schools, marking a significant shift from the previous Accra-centered system.
He concluded by sending out his sincere condolences to the families of the six potential recruits who lost their lives during the early stages of the recruitment process.
