Ghana received 1,288,804 international visitors in 2024, marking a 12% year-on-year growth, according to the latest Tourism Report from the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA). The figures reinforce the country’s status as one of West Africa’s most attractive travel destinations.
Business travel emerged as the top reason for visiting Ghana, accounting for 22.43% of total arrivals. Visits to family and friends followed closely at 22.29%, with holiday or vacation travel at 22.15%, and study or teaching at 7.06%. Other travel purposes included conferences, cultural activities, and transit.
Kotoka International Airport remained the main gateway, handling over 1.13 million arrivals. Land borders such as Aflao, Elubo, and Paga also contributed to the total.
The United States led the origin list with 137,862 visitors, followed by Nigeria (111,581) and the United Kingdom (52,845). These three countries accounted for a large portion of the traffic, underlining Ghana’s strong ties with both diaspora and business communities abroad.
Tourist impressions were largely positive, 88% described Ghana as an “ideal tourism destination,” citing Ghanaian hospitality (94%), cultural heritage (39%), safety (39%), and cuisine (28%) as standout qualities.
Visitor satisfaction was high, with 78% rating their overall experience as excellent. High marks were also given to tour guide services, restaurants, wildlife experiences, and historic sites such as forts and castles.
As global tourism rebounds post-pandemic, the GTA says Ghana’s continued growth will depend on infrastructure upgrades, enhanced service delivery, and promotion of its rich cultural assets. The authority believes data-driven policy and investment can further position Ghana as a top destination for both business and leisure in Africa.
