Ghana to power 150 remote communities with renewable energy

In a major stride toward energy equity and sustainability, the Government of Ghana has unveiled a bold initiative to electrify 150 off-grid island and lakeside communities using renewable energy.

This ambitious project aims to reach over 250,000 people in areas historically excluded from the national grid.

The announcement follows the successful commissioning of mini-grid systems in Azizakpe, Alorkem, and Aflive, three remote communities in the Ada East District.

These projects, backed by funding from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), have brought electricity to these areas for the first time, transforming lives and livelihoods.

At the commissioning ceremony, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, hailed the mini-grid installations as a turning point for energy access in the country.

“This marks a new era in our renewable energy journey,” Jinapor stated. “The government is set to roll out a larger programme that will connect 150 additional communities, bringing reliable power to even the most remote parts of Ghana. No community will be left behind.”

The initiative is part of the government’s broader Light for Life Programme, which targets 99.8% electricity coverage nationwide.

Jinapor emphasized that renewable energy will be central to this effort, ensuring a sustainable and inclusive transition.

“These mini-grids are more than just infrastructure, they are engines of opportunity,” he added. “We expect to see a surge in small businesses, improved health and education services, and a better quality of life in all beneficiary areas.”

As the government scales up its investment in green energy, the electrification of Ghana’s remote communities is set to become a cornerstone of its national development agenda.
