President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana will soon ban the importation and production of Styrofoam, commonly used for food packaging, citing its significant contribution to environmental pollution.

The announcement came during the launch of the 2025 national tree-planting exercise, a government initiative to restore Ghana’s forest cover and combat climate change.

Mahama described Styrofoam as one of the country’s “most harmful pollutants,” particularly due to its widespread use in takeaway food packaging. He emphasized the urgent need for sustainable alternatives like paper and aluminum foil.

“Where you buy your food, they put it in that whitish something, that’s Styrofoam. You finish eating and dump it. That is one of the biggest polluters,” he said.

He warned manufacturers and importers to prepare for the policy shift, as the Ministry of Environment will soon move to enforce the ban.

“We’re going to ban the importation and production of Styrofoam plastics in Ghana. We have to switch to eco-friendly packaging,” he added.

The planned ban is part of broader government efforts to curb plastic waste and promote environmentally sustainable practices nationwide.
