Ghana has struck a major trade deal with China that eliminates tariffs on all Ghanaian exports. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the breakthrough on X (formerly Twitter) on June 12, 2025.

This new tariff-free regime covers 100% of goods exported from Ghana. It is expected to boost trade, create jobs, and empower a new generation of local entrepreneurs.

China remains Ghana’s top trading partner, with trade volumes surpassing $11 billion last year. With this agreement, Ghanaian producers now have better access to the world’s second-largest consumer market.

Moreover, the two countries discussed major industrial collaborations. One key focus is the development of Ghana’s bauxite reserves, which hold over 900 million tonnes. The goal is to build a fully integrated aluminium industry, supported by modern rail infrastructure to move raw materials and finished products more efficiently.

Additionally, Ghana and China plan to establish an electric car manufacturing plant. This project ties directly into Ghana’s newly confirmed lithium deposits, which contain millions of tonnes of lithium oxide. If successful, this move could place Ghana at the forefront of the global green energy transition.

To formalize these initiatives, both countries will soon sign a comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. This deal will strengthen cooperation across various sectors, including trade, mining, and technology.

Minister Ablakwa emphasized the Mahama administration’s vision. “We are committed to using diplomacy as a tool to transform our economy,” he said. He described the agreement as a bold step toward industrialisation and long-term economic growth.
