Since John Mahama returned to power, Ghana has sadly become a gory scene of tragedy and disaster. The sense of insecurity has deepened as citizens watch communal violence, killings, and fatal accidents rise without effective government response.
From market infernos to road carnage, from drowning schoolchildren to brutal festival clashes, the atmosphere feels cursed, and the govt appears overwhelmed and incapable of safeguarding lives and property.
Below is a catalog of some notable tragedies, disasters and violent killings recorded under Mahama in just 8months:
January
1. Jan 1 – Kantamanto Market Fire where over 60% of the second-hand clothing market got destroyed, displacing 8,000 to 10,000 traders; 2 deaths reported.
2. Jan 6 – Tamale, Aboabo Timber Market Fire where multiple stalls were destroyed causing trafders to lose millions of cedis.
3. Jan 12 – Techiman Central Market Fire where hundreds of stalls were lost in a night fire.
4. Jan 19 – Obuasi (Ashanti) where Soldiers opened fire on illegal miners, killing 7 of them.
5. Jan 24 – Kumasi, Kejetia Market Fire outbreak whre some shops got burnt.
February
6. Feb 1 – Anum–Asikuma (Eastern): Road crash
Head-on collision that killed 4 people..
March
7. Mar 21 – Kumasi PZ/Adum Fire: Two-day blaze gutted multiple retail shops. Loads of traders lost their lifetime investment.
April
8. Apr 9 – Inchaban Market Fire (Shama, Western Region) where 10 shops were destroyed at dawn; losses worth millions recorded.
May
9. May 18–23 – Accra Floods: At least 5 deaths confirmed after heavy rains.
10. May 19 – Cape Coast Gas Explosion: Final-year UCC student died in domestic explosion.
11. May 24–25 – Lightning Strikes (Volta & W/North) killing 5 people in total (woman in Ho; 4 children in Sefwi Awaso).
June
12. Jun 14 – Lawra SHS, Upper West where
7 students drowned in the Black Volta during an outing.
13. Jun 24–25 – Accra Arts Centre Fire Blaze destroyed 50+ wooden structures
14. Jun 25–30 – Nkwanta (Oti Region): Ethnic clashes
At least 7 killed; one SHS student shot dead on campus.
July
15. Jul 1–11 – Dzodze (Ketu North): Taxi driver Patrick Tetteh murdered. He was killed by passengers and his vehicle stolen.
16. Jul 9 – Accra (Ashongman): Immigration Officer Stephen King Amoah was murdered. The Officer went missing Jul 4, body found Jul 9.
17. Jul 15 – Madina (Accra), Ritz Junction Fire where an Infant was killed; stalls destroyed.
18. Jul 19 – Karlo (Western North) where a mother confessed to killing her 4-year-old son by drowning.
19. Jul 19 – Agona Abodom (Central): Landguard clashes that led to 4 people being killed.
20. Jul 21 – Kpone/Tema: Police shoot-out leadind to 3 robbery suspects killed.
21. Jul 21 – Accra Arts Centre: Immigration Officer Japhet Boateng Kyei killed. The Officer was struck by a speeding vehicle while helping a motorist.
22. Jul 26–27 – Bawku/Nalerigu SHS Attacks. Armed assailants invaded schools and killed 3 students.
23. Jul 28 – Obogu, Asante Akyem South (Ashanti) Road crash. 16 children/youth killed in church bus–tanker collision.
August
24. Aug 6 – Asamankese (Eastern) Road crash. Tipper truck rammed into filling station; 1 killed, several injured.
25. Aug 6 – Akrofuom (Ashanti) Air Force helicopter crash. 8 dead, including Defence and Environment Ministers.
26. Aug 7 – Ejisu–Konongo road crash. Several feared dead after 2M Express bus crash.
27. Aug 10 – Teshie Homowo Festival Violence. 2 people were killed, several injured in clashes during sprinkling of kpokpoi.
28. Aug 13 – Achimota (Accra) Suicide. A Man jumped from Dimples overpass and died on impact.
29. Aug 14 – Dzemeni (Volta Lake) Boat accident. 5 people died and 15 injured.
30. Aug 16 – Asuboi (Accra–Kumasi Highway) Road crash. At least 5 people were killed.
31. Aug 20 – Bontibor (Oti Region) River drowning. A 17-year-old boy drowned in River Gyele.
32. Aug 22–26 – Kasoa New Market Fire where dozens of shops were destroyed.
33. Aug 24–25 – Gbiniyiri (Savannah Region) Land dispute clashes. Between 6–10 people were killed over two days.
34. Aug 26 – Nkawkaw–Accra Highway Road crash. 7 people were killed in passenger–truck collision.
35. Aug 26–27 – Kumasi, Suame Post Office Market Fire. Inferno gutted 100–300+ shops.
36. Aug. 27 — Bole/Sawla Tribal Conflict. At least 6 people were killed and 18 others injured, with families displaced and property destroyed amid attacks in the Chenchire (Chenchire) area near Mandari in Bole District. Armed men reportedly carried out the fatalities.
37. Aug 29 – Black Volta (Nakwabi) Boat capsized. Several feared dead; residents were fled clashes.
38. Aug 30 – Accra, Agbogbloshie/Konkomba Market Fire where over 500 structures were destroyed.
