The Ghana Health Service, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has issued a renewed public health alert on meningitis, urging residents especially those in meningitis-prone areas to remain vigilant during the dry and dusty season.
In a press release dated January 14, 2026, the Health Service explained that the alert serves as a reminder of an earlier notice issued in December 2025, warning of a possible outbreak of the disease. Meningitis is described as a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that causes inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord and can spread rapidly, particularly in overcrowded environments.

According to the release, common symptoms of meningitis include sudden high fever, severe headache, stiff neck or pain when bending the neck forward, nausea and vomiting, confusion, drowsiness, difficulty waking, and seizures. In infants, symptoms may include a bulging fontanelle, persistent crying, and refusal to feed.
The Ghana Health Service noted that individuals most at risk include children under five years, adolescents and young adults, the elderly, people living in overcrowded conditions, and those with weakened immune systems.
As part of preventive measures, the public has been advised to avoid overcrowded and poorly ventilated spaces, practice good respiratory hygiene, wash hands regularly with soap and water, stay well hydrated, and ensure routine immunizations are up to date. Members of the public are also encouraged to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear.
The statement further urged anyone who suspects a meningitis case to report promptly to the nearest health facility, stressing that early detection and treatment can save lives.
The Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service assured the public that disease surveillance systems have been strengthened nationwide and that health facilities are on high alert to respond swiftly to any suspected cases.
