Ghana has shut down its embassy in Tehran with immediate effect as tensions between Iran and Israel escalate. Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision on Monday, citing the need to protect Ghanaian lives.

“The Mahama administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran,” Ablakwa wrote on social media.

The government has initiated evacuation efforts via Iran’s land borders. This operation includes embassy staff, students, professionals, and other Ghanaian nationals currently residing in the country.

“To guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect,” Ablakwa added.

He assured the public that the government is doing everything possible to ensure the safe passage of those affected. Additionally, he noted that Ghana is monitoring the security situation in Israel closely and may issue further updates.

“In the interim, we have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum. All Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” he said.

The government also renewed its appeal for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, emphasizing that every effort will be made to protect Ghanaian lives abroad.
