GH COVID-19 app can be used for spy – Data protection expert raises red flag

Data protection practitioner, Mr. Emmanuel Gadasu has said the features of the GH Covid-19 app could make it possible for other uses such as spying.

According to Mr. Gadasu, on Adom TV’s Big Agenda programme monitored by Awake News, with current state of the app, it has access to user’s microphones raising serious issues of privacy.

He said the app was intended to be used for contact tracing of people who might come in contact with people who tested positive for corona virus therefore it was unnecessary for the app to have access to user’s microphones.

Mr. Gadasu also said it is questionable why the app was not deployed on app stores: Google Play store and Apple store as the owner of those platforms have the features and structures to check those privacy issues and comfortable for public usage.

When asked by the host, Captain Smart if he will personally recommend to anyone to download the app and use, he replied with the current state of the app, he will not until such a time that those privacy issues are addressed.

The GHc1.4m application was launched by the ministry of communication to help enhanced contact tracing.
