Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has revealed a major boost in financial support for tertiary students, announcing that the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) will increase its allocation to the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) from GH¢70 million to GH¢150 million next year.
The announcement was made during the launch of the government’s new ‘No Fees Stress’ policy on Friday, July 4, 2025. The initiative aims to ease the financial burden on students seeking higher education in Ghana.
“Next year, GETFUND will double its allocation to the Students Loan Trust from GH¢70 million to GH¢150 million to support students who may want to access it,” the Minister stated.
Mr. Iddrisu also indicated that the government is taking bold steps to reform the country’s scholarship system. A new Scholarship Authority Bill will be presented in Parliament next week to address long-standing concerns over nepotism and lack of transparency in scholarship awards.
“I will lay the bill in Parliament to deal with the favouritism and cronyism that plagued the scholarship system,” he added.
These reforms are part of the government’s broader efforts to make higher education more accessible and equitable, especially for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
