The Ghana Education Service (GES) has assured newly posted teachers that their 10-month salary arrears will soon be paid.

This comes after teachers who reported for duty in September 2024 picketed the GES headquarters in Accra on Monday, June 23, 2025. Their demands included the immediate payment of unpaid salaries and the issuance of Staff IDs.
In a statement issued on June 24, GES said it empathizes with the teachers and is committed to resolving the issue. “Their welfare is a top priority, and we are working diligently to address the matter,” the statement noted.
GES explained that the delays resulted from an expired financial clearance inherited by the current leadership. The clearance, which enabled salary processing, expired on December 31, 2024.
The Service added that it has since been engaging the Ministry of Finance to secure a new clearance and confirm the availability of funds.
“We are pleased to confirm that budgetary allocations have been made for these teachers in the 2025 National Budget. We remain optimistic that the necessary funds will be released soon.”
Joint Committee and Internal Challenges
GES announced the formation of a joint technical committee that includes five representatives from the affected teachers. This committee is working with GES management to speed up the resolution process.
However, GES urged the teacher groups to remain united. It warned that the frequent formation of new groups and changes in leadership were slowing progress.
“We appeal for coordinated and consistent representation. Unified leadership will improve communication and accelerate solutions.”
Broader Commitment to Teacher Welfare
GES reaffirmed its commitment to staff welfare, highlighting recent achievements under its current leadership.
Over 50,000 teaching and non-teaching staff have been promoted and placed on appropriate salary scales. Additionally, GES is working to resolve long-delayed promotions, including those for teachers eligible for Deputy Director roles for over 10 years.
“While we fully understand the frustrations of the affected teachers, we respectfully urge patience and continued cooperation,” the statement concluded.
GES thanked the public for its support and reaffirmed its mission to uphold the dignity and integrity of the teaching profession.
