The German Embassy in Accra has expressed heartfelt condolences to the people of Ghana and music lovers around the world following the passing of highlife icon, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.
In a tribute released on Monday, July 28, the Embassy praised Lumba’s exceptional contributions to music and culture, noting his legacy as one that transcended borders.
The Embassy highlighted Germany’s significant role in shaping Daddy Lumba’s illustrious career. It was during his time in Germany in the late 1980s that he transitioned from gospel to highlife music.
In 1989, he teamed up with fellow Ghanaian musician Nana Acheampong to form the legendary Lumba Brothers, pioneers of the Borga Highlife genre, an innovative blend of traditional Ghanaian rhythms and Western musical influences, especially from the Ghanaian diaspora in Germany.
Daddy Lumba lived in Cologne and recorded in Düsseldorf and Monheim am Rhein, collaborating with top German producers.
His iconic song “Homeless” even included German phrases, symbolizing the deep cultural exchange that influenced his sound.
“We honour his artistic excellence and celebrate the enduring cultural connections he helped build,” the Embassy’s statement read.
Daddy Lumba passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the age of 60, leaving behind a trailblazing musical legacy and a fan base that spans continents.
