Galamsey: Wendell arrested, detained on orders of Govt for accusing appointees – Vormawor alleges

Mr. Oliver Barker Vormawor has alleged that the Government has ordered the arrest and detention of Wendell Yeboah, Head of Mobilization of Democracy Hub for accusing some appointees of engaging in Galamsey.

In the Facebook post, the Executive Director of the Democracy Hub said:

Wendell Yeboah, Head of Mobilization of Democracy Hub has been arrested by the Police HQ.
Police say he is being detained on the orders of Govt, for accusing Govt appointees of Galamsey.

If readers can recall,  on November 19, 2025, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service was petitioned to investigate allegations of illegal mining levelled against three regional ministers by a leading member of Democracy Hub.

In a petition dated 19th November 2025, three individuals from the Ashanti Region, namely; Daniel Sasu Omari, Jerry James Suker, and Darren Jackson Pra, called on the CID to initiate a “formal investigation into allegations recently made by Mr. Wendell Nana Yaw Yeboah, Head of Mobilization at Democracy Hub” during a live interview on Aluta FM.

During the broadcast on 18th November 2025, Wendell Yeboah alleged that the Ashanti, Western, and Eastern Regional Ministers were actively engaged in illegal mining (galamsey).

According to the petitioners, the claims, which were widely circulated, had the potential to “undermine public confidence, distort national discourse, and distract from the ongoing efforts to combat this national challenge.”

They noted that President Mahama has shown unwavering commitment to the fight against galamsey, making the allegations even more damaging if left unverified.

However, following intense public scrutiny, Mr. Yeboah later issued a retraction and apology, admitting the allegations were “not based on truth or evidence.”

The petitioners acknowledged this apology but insisted that it was not enough to close the matter.

“Although this apology is noted, the gravity of the initial claims makes it imperative that the Ghana Police Service conducts an independent investigation,” they argued.

The petition further stresses the need for the CID to determine whether the false allegations were made with malicious intent and to prevent similar incidents in the future, which may “threaten reputational harm to public officials and weaken national resolve against illegal mining.”

The group is therefore requesting that the CID invites individuals connected to the broadcast, including the programme’s producer to assist with investigations and provide any evidence that may support or refute the allegations.

They emphasized that publicly accusing three Ministers of State of engaging in illegal mining “is a matter that cannot be overlooked,” adding that “the truth must be established to protect the integrity of public office and to maintain public trust.”

The petitioners expressed confidence that the CID will treat the matter with the urgency it deserves.
