The Blue Water Guards

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has open an application for the recruitment of Blue Water Guards in the Ashanti, Eastern and Central Regions of Ghana.

The spokesperson for the Ministry, Paa Kwesi Schandorf made this disclosure in a media interview, today, November 27, 2025. In July this year, Lands Minister inaugurated the second batch of 530 Blue Water Guards and charged recruits to be steadfast in safeguarding environment.

Blue Water Guards (BWG) is an initiative of the President John Mahama-led NDC government to combat illegal mining (galamsey) by protecting rivers and other water bodies from pollution.

The BWG work with the Ghana Navy and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to monitor rivers, gather intelligence, and report illegal activities. While trained in skills like surveillance, boat handling, and combat, their primary role is intelligence gathering, not direct confrontation, and they are designed to provide a community-led, intelligence-based system.
