GACL wins court battle to reclaim airport lands from McDan

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has won a court battle against the McDan Group, successfully reclaiming over 16 acres of land near Kotoka International Airport.

On May 6, 2025, an Accra High Court granted GACL full ownership and re-entry of lands previously occupied by McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, both subsidiaries of the McDan Group.

These plots, 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres, are located opposite and adjacent to Action Chapel International, near the airport. The companies had leased the properties in 2012 but failed to meet the terms.

In February 2025, GACL filed a lawsuit to recover the lands. The suit cited violations of the lease agreement and $26,296 in unpaid ground rent. GACL also requested a permanent injunction to block McDan from using the property.

After months of legal proceedings, GACL applied for a summary judgment, stating that the defendants lacked a valid defense. The court agreed and awarded all reliefs, including GH¢50,000 in legal costs.

This development follows the December 2024 suspension of McDan Aviation’s operations at Terminal 1, which occurred due to outstanding debts. Although those debts were later paid, the land issue remained unresolved until now.

A GACL official praised the outcome, saying it protects valuable national assets and upholds proper land management.

Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, GACL’s Managing Director, led the effort alongside the company’s Legal Department.

With the reclaimed lands secured, GACL plans to explore aviation expansion projects and strategic partnerships. These steps aim to improve airport infrastructure and boost long-term revenue for the company.
