King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II is asking the Supreme Court to overturn a ruling that reinstated Nii Adama Latse II in the National Register of Chiefs as Ga Mantse. He filed a certiorari application arguing that the High Court erred by not giving him a fair hearing before issuing its order in November 2021.
His lawyer, Prof. Peter Atupare, contends that the court violated Tsuru’s right to be heard and that the judgment was irrational. He also argues the ruling could create confusion by listing two individuals as Ga Mantse.
The Court of Appeal recently upheld the High Court’s decision, ordering the National House of Chiefs to restore Adama Latse’s name within 14 days. However, Tsuru’s team claims the court lacked jurisdiction and ignored due process.
Meanwhile, the National House of Chiefs has filed a stay of execution and is seeking leave to appeal the decision at the Supreme Court.
A 2021 ruling removed Adama Latse’s name from the register. He challenged it through a judicial review. Both the High Court and Court of Appeal ruled in his favor, stating there was no valid destoolment and the removal was unlawful.
King Tsuru’s office insists that the judiciary cannot determine who holds a chieftaincy title, and that the matter is still pending before the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.
The office urges the public to disregard misinterpretations and remain calm.
