The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has announced that the postponed implementation of the GHS1 fuel levy, now set for June 16, 2025, will ease the burden on oil marketing companies (OMCs), allowing them adequate time to prepare.

Initially scheduled for June 9 by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the levy faced pushback from the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), which cited short notice and inadequate stakeholder engagement. Following these concerns, the implementation date was revised.

Speaking at the 2025 Safety Week Celebration hosted by COMAC, NPA Acting Chief Executive Edudzi Tameklo commended the Chamber’s proactive advocacy, calling it instrumental in delaying the rollout.

“Parliament authorized this on June 3, and it received presidential assent shortly after,” Tameklo noted. Initially, the industry raised serious concerns, and rightly so. While we appreciate the importance of revenue mobilization, we also recognize the financial strain this would impose on OMCs.”

He praised COMAC’s collaborative approach, stating that it helped the NPA appreciate the full impact of the levy on the sector.

“Thanks be to God, we were able to reach a consensus. Today, I can confidently say that COMAC members are better positioned to prepare and stabilize their financial operations,” he added.

The move is being lauded as a positive example of regulatory responsiveness and stakeholder collaboration within Ghana’s petroleum sector.
