“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, 4th July 2025 has been declared a Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” a statement from the Ministry of the Interior read.

Changes to National Holiday Calendar

This declaration follows Parliament’s passage of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025, on Wednesday, June 25. The amendment removes the August 4 Founders’ Day and reinstates September 21, the birthday of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as Founders’ Day.

Key Amendments Include:

  • August 4 Founders’ Day holiday removed
  • September 21 (Nkrumah’s birthday) reinstated as Founders’ Day
  • July 1 (Republic Day) was officially declared a public holiday

Why the Change?

Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak explained in Parliament that the change aims to unify Ghanaians around a common historical figure, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, rather than a divisive interpretation of Ghana’s independence movement.

“We’ve taken out August 4 as Founders’ Day because we believe it divides rather than unites Ghanaians,” he said. “Now, September 21 will be celebrated as Founders’ Day in honour of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.”
