Franklin Cudjoe, Founding President of IMANI Africa, has called for greater transparency in how the government appoints individuals to public institutions. He believes secrecy in such appointments undermines accountability.

Cudjoe was reacting to the recent dismissal and subsequent reinstatement of more than 100 staff at the Bank of Ghana. These employees were hired in December 2024 during the final days of the previous administration.

Speaking on TV3’s News Central on Friday, June 27, Cudjoe insisted that the government must disclose the criteria used in selecting, interviewing, and appointing public servants. According to him, this transparency is essential because these employees are paid with taxpayer funds.

“We fund the government through taxes,” he said. “So we deserve to know how appointees were selected, and what roles they play in boosting national productivity.”

He argued that providing such information would help build public trust and prevent backlash. “If the Bank had explained the appointments earlier, the public might not have reacted so harshly to the dismissals,” he added.

Cudjoe also pointed out that open communication can shield institutions from political criticism. “When you’re transparent, you avoid being accused of repeating past mistakes,” he noted.

He went on to praise the Bank of Ghana Governor for reversing the dismissals, a move he believes would not have happened under the previous government. “I honestly don’t think the previous administration would’ve reconsidered,” he said. “So credit to the Governor for showing leadership.”
