The Forestry Commission Board has officially petitioned for the revocation of Executive Instrument (E.I.) 144, the directive that permitted private development within portions of the Achimota Forest Reserve.
The move forms part of renewed efforts to safeguard the integrity of the forest, which remains one of Accra’s most significant ecological assets.
E.I. 144, which has been widely criticised by environmental advocates and sections of the public, allowed parts of the reserve to be reclassified for development purposes. Critics have consistently warned that such actions threaten biodiversity, increase environmental degradation, and undermine climate resilience in the capital.
In its petition, the Board emphasised the urgent need to reverse the directive to prevent further encroachment and to restore the forest’s protected status. It noted that preserving the Achimota Forest is critical to maintaining air quality, regulating temperatures, and supporting urban biodiversity.
The Achimota Forest Reserve, often described as the “green lungs” of Accra, plays a vital role in mitigating the effects of urbanisation and climate change.
The Board’s action signals a strong institutional commitment to prioritising environmental sustainability and responsible land use. Stakeholders say the decision, if approved, will mark a significant step toward protecting Ghana’s natural heritage for future generations.
The petition is now expected to be reviewed by the appropriate authorities for consideration.
