German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed shock on Sunday following a deadly attack in Sydney that Australian authorities called an act of terrorism targetting the Jewish community.
Wadephul said in a post on X that he was “deeply shaken by the terrorist attack,” describing the mass shooting at Bondi Beach as “an act of hatred directed against all Jewish women and men worldwide on the first day of Hanukkah.”
He said his thoughts were with the families of those killed, the injured and the Jewish community.
At least 12 people were killed, along with one of the attackers, according to officials.
Hundreds of people had gathered for an event at the famed beach to mark the start of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah on Sunday.
