The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has activated an emergency preparedness plan and begun the evacuation of some staff of Ghana’s Embassy in Tehran following escalating hostilities in the Middle East.

A press release issued by the Ministry said the move formed part of precautionary measures to ensure the safety of Ghanaian nationals and diplomatic personnel in the affected region.

The Ministry said it was closely monitoring developments, including coordinated military strikes by the United States of America and Israel against targets within the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as reported retaliatory actions by Iran against United States and Israeli military assets in the region.

It said the developments had resulted in airspace closures, flight disruptions, and heightened security alerts across several countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Government of Ghana has called on all parties involved to exercise restraint, de-escalate tensions, and return to diplomatic engagement to protect lives, ensure economic stability, and maintain regional peace.

The Ministry advised Ghanaian nationals to avoid non-essential travel to and from the Middle East and urged those residing in affected countries to remain indoors where possible, comply with directives issued by local authorities, and exercise heightened vigilance.

It further advised Ghanaian nationals to avoid large gatherings and sensitive locations, monitor official communications, keep travel documents readily accessible, and maintain contact with the nearest Ghanaian diplomatic mission.

The Ministry said essential personnel would remain at the Embassy in Tehran to coordinate assistance to Ghanaian nationals, while assessments continued regarding further evacuation measures if necessary.

It assured that Ghana’s diplomatic missions in the region remained available to provide consular support and urged nationals requiring emergency assistance to contact the Ministry or Ghana’s diplomatic missions in the respective countries.
