Ex-Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko forward Charles Taylor has advised young players to prioritize and focus on earning money rather than building a good name.
According to him, after bidding farewell to football, you won’t be respected if you do not have money and live a luxurious lifestyle.
In an interview with Sporty FM, Taylor shared a sad ordeal he suffered after he was grossly disrespected because he drove a less expensive car.
According to him, despite making headlines during his peak, he believes that should have been exchanged with ‘money’ because ‘good name’ does not take you anywhere.
“That is why I always say the young footballers out there should focus on money first. At first, the focus was on making a name, but a good name does not take you anywhere. All the good name is money. We have now changed it. Money is better than a good name,” he stated.
The former Ghanaian international added that life will make people treat you badly if you decide to earn a good name, citing an example he encountered at the stadium.
“If you decide to earn a good name in this life, these same people will lambast you. Because how can I get to the stadium for me to wait, and then a young player like Afena Gyan goes in? If I were driving a Range Rover, do you think I would have been treated that way or even driving any luxury cars? he stressed.
Taylor enjoyed a stellar sixteen-year career where he further featured for clubs like Great Olympics, Étoile du Sahel, Enugu Rangers, and Berekum Chelsea.
He made sixteen appearances for the Black Stars and also played in Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualifying games.
Currently he serves as a sports pundit on Angel TV.
