A swift and coordinated response by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has averted a potential fuel tanker explosion following an accident on the Nyangbo–Tafi Mador road in the Volta Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at about 6:05 a.m., when a fuel tanker travelling from Accra to Yendi overturned, resulting in fuel spillage along the roadway. Firefighters from the Anfoega and Kpando Fire Stations, led by Benjamin Yao Yaotse (DOIII), were promptly dispatched to the scene, with support from the Volta Regional GNFS towing truck.

Upon arrival, the firefighters immediately secured the area, shut down the tanker’s engine, and applied firefighting foam to contain the spillage. These actions successfully prevented a possible explosion and ensured the safety of road users and nearby communities.
The driver of the tanker sustained minor injuries and was transported to Margaret Marquart Hospital for medical attention. No fatalities were recorded.
The tanker was later recovered, the affected area rendered safe, and traffic on the Nyangbo–Tafi Mador road was restored.
The Ghana National Fire Service has once again reiterated the importance of swift emergency response and adherence to road safety measures, especially in the transportation of flammable substances.
