Assin Fosu (C/R), Aug. 05, GNA – Dr Juliette Dufie Otami, the Central Regional Director of Education has said, examination malpractices posed a serious threat to the nation and needed urgent attention to save the situation from escalating.

She made the remarks during the 40th anniversary, speech and prize-giving day of Obiri Yeboah Senior High and Technical School (OYESS), on the theme: “Quality Education; A Tool for Building a better Ghana.”

Dr Otami stated that examination malpractices undermined the integrity of the country’s education system, distorted true academic performance and fostered a culture of mediocrity.

As a result, students who cheated in examination, progressed to higher level and entered the workforce without the necessary knowledge, skills or ethical foundation for success, she said.

She said the consequences was devastating not only to the individual but the entire nation.

Dr Otami also cautioned teachers who engaged or facilitated examination malpractices that they were in direct violation of the professional code of conduct of the GES and must therefore put a stop to it.

She said the Ghana Education Service would not hesitate to apply the appropriate disciplinary measures including dismissal and legal action against any teacher who indulged in examination malpractices, without fear or favour.

In addition, she said students who were culpable would face severe consequences including cancellation of results, disqualification and in some cases prosecution.

She therefore admonished students to take their studies seriously, reject shortcuts and easy ways out and rather strive for excellence.

The Central Regional Director of Education told parents and guardians to monitor their children’s behaviour, teach them the right values at home and be actively involved in their education.
