Every Ghanaian is protected by the rule of law – Akufo Addo to UN

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated to the international community that every Ghanaian is protected by the the rule of law.

Addressing the annual UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday September 25, 2024, he stated the 2024 general elections will be transparent, free and fair.

He said “Ghanaians have demonstrated time and again in the last three decades the strong attachment to democracy which they will not permit to be undermined. The EC supported by Ghana’s security services is well equipped to ensure that the will of the Ghanaian people is well respected.”

He reaffirmed his commitment ending his governance on a good note saying  “As my presidency draws to a close, I want to assure this assembly that the upcoming 2024 elections in Ghana will be free, fair and transparent.

According to him “Ghana continues to be a beacon of good governance in Africa, we have enacted laws and implemented policies that uphold the principles of accountability and ensure that every Ghanaian, regardless of their background, is protected by the rule of law”.

During the 2020 general elections, state security personnel engaged unarmed civilian with fire arms that resulted in the deaths of eight people, including three minors. The victims are yet to receive justice from the government of the day.

However, in preparations towards the 2024 general elections the Electoral Commission has committed some errors including the illegal transfer of thousands of votes to different constituencies warranting a call for an audit of the voters register.

Though president Nana Akufo Addo has assured the international of a free and fair election, he has remain silent on the debacle that has plagued the EC.

The opposition NDC believe only a forensic audit will identify all the errors in the register and render solutions on fixing it.
