Former Ghana international Michael Essien has signed a new two-year contract to remain as assistant coach of Danish club FC Nordsjælland.

Essien, 42, first joined the club in September 2020 as a player-coach and later transitioned into a full-time coaching role. His previous deal was due to expire soon, but the club has confirmed that he will continue for the upcoming season.

Essien holds a UEFA A License and has completed specialised UEFA training in football management and organisation, further enhancing his technical and tactical expertise on the sidelines.

Widely known for his powerful presence in midfield during his playing days, Essien earned 59 caps for Ghana and featured in both the 2006 and 2014 FIFA World Cups. He also played for top clubs such as Chelsea, Real Madrid, Lyon, AC Milan, and Bastia, with later stints in Indonesia and Azerbaijan.

In 2024, Essien turned down an offer to become assistant coach for the Ghana national team under Otto Addo, choosing instead to focus on his development at Nordsjælland.

His continued role at the club signals a strong commitment to building a long-term coaching career in Europe.
