The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced a significant boost in Ghana’s natural gas output, led by Italian energy giant ENI, as part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the national power grid and improve energy reliability.
Starting Sunday, July 13, 2025, ENI will increase its natural gas supply by 30 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd), raising the total supply to 270 MMscfd.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure and supporting long-term sustainability goals.
To facilitate this increase, ENI will temporarily suspend gas export operations, a move the Ministry says may cause short-term disruptions in domestic power supply.
“We are confident that these proactive steps will manage the transition effectively and ensure stable power for all citizens,” said Ministry spokesperson Richmond Rockson.
Power Outage Scheduled for July 13
Energy Minister John Jinapor confirmed that there will be a nationwide power interruption on Sunday, July 13, due to a planned shutdown of gas valves for maintenance and upgrades.
“ENI will turn off its valves temporarily to enable the upgrade. This may lead to brief power outages,” he said during the commissioning of the 161kV Anwomaso, Kumasi transmission line on July 8.
He assured the public that the inconvenience will be short-lived and that the enhancement will ultimately benefit the entire energy sector.
“This is a necessary step to stabilise the energy sector and enhance future output,” the Minister added.
The Ministry said it has implemented contingency measures in collaboration with key stakeholders to ensure electricity stability during the transition.
