Electoral Commission reports 5 employees to Police over stolen BVDs

The Electoral Commission has reported five of its staff members to the Ghana Police Service for a thorough investigation regarding the stolen Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs). Announcing the latest update, the Director of Electoral Services, Dr Serebour Quaicoe said the Commission needed to seek justice.

“What I can say on authority is that we lost one BVD in North Tongu and what happened was that we normally package these things in ballot boxes. You put your systems and you seal. In the course of transporting, we got there, they couldn’t transport the ballot boxes.”

“So we reported to the police. We have lost this and these are the suspects so investigate and let them go through the legal regime.

“Whatever has to be done should be done. They have been interdicted they are now going through the investigations. So, the police I am told that they will be arraigned before court soon,” Dr Serebour stated.

Meanwhile, when the issue of stolen BVDs was first raised by the Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson, the EC shot down the claims. Ato Forson alleged that seven BVDs were missing and called on the Police CID to get involved and investigate the matter. But the Electoral Commission released a statement to respond to the claims of the NDC lawmaker and denied the claim.

In that statement, the EC said only its laptops were missing, not BVDs as alleged by Ato Forson. It also added that the laptops were five and were not activated thus posing no security threat to the Commission’s efforts.
