Election 2024: speak against the evils of the government – Mahama appeals to churches

NDC Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama has urged the Christian community to stand up and speak truth to power. He said the church remains the nation’s moral mouthpiece and must live up to the bill by speaking to the wrongs of society.

John Mahama made this appeal during an interaction with the Christian Ecumenical Council on Monday. Listing some of the happenings that require the moral voice of the church, Mahama pointed to the recent Ejisu by-election. He also mentioned the limited voter registration exercise where the NPP has been accused of busing in foreigners to register.

John Mahama said the independence of many state institutions has been eroded due to political appointments into those institutions. He alleged that the Electoral Commission which should be a neutral body has party footsoldiers now leading as Commissioners.

“This is a president who is appointing politically exposed people into positions of trust where they are supposed to be neutral and non-partisan and so people who have been communicators for the party, people who have been IT backstops for the party, today are Commissioners of the Electoral Commission.

“How do you expect them to be neutral and fair in what is happening?” he remarked.

“People who were patrons of TESCON on campus are today Commissioners of the Electoral Commission. But we want to wake up the conscience of the nation that the right thing must be done so that the outcome can actually be the will of the people”.

John Mahama pledged the NDC’s commitment to democracy and called on others especially the church to join the train of peace and democracy. He urged the church to be vigilant to make sure the right thing is done.

“So going up to the election, we will continue to play our part. We will raise the red flags anytime we think things are not going very well. And we believe that the church community should also keep an eye and be vigilant in terms of making sure that the right thing is done.”
