Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, has intensified calls for reforms at Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), insisting that its current leadership lacks the independence and credibility required to oversee fair elections.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, July 5, Agbana declared:

“The current Electoral Commission, for us, is not fit for purpose. There must be changes. This composition does not allow us to describe the EC as truly independent.”

His remarks come in response to the EC’s decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency. The Commission made the announcement on July 2, citing unresolved concerns from the disputed December 2024 elections.

The NDC had accused the EC of using scanned Pink Sheets without proper verification, claiming they were submitted by NPP agents after original documents were destroyed during chaos at the collation centre. The EC later agreed to a rerun in the most disputed polling stations to uphold electoral integrity.

While the NPP has threatened legal action and boycotted the rerun, Agbana says the NDC is ready to contest and reclaim the seat.

“We welcome the decision. We’ll campaign house to house in Ablekuma North and take back that seat,” he said. “If the NPP wants to boycott, that’s their choice. But we are confident of victory.”

Despite the rerun, Agbana insists it’s not enough to restore public trust in the EC, which he accused of long-standing institutional failures.

The rerun is scheduled for Friday, July 11, with the Ghana Police Service deployed to ensure peace and security.
