Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor has announced that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) generated GHC1.6 billion in revenue in the first half of 2025.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, July 2, Jinapor said that although ECG fell short of its GHC2.5 billion target, the performance marks a strong improvement compared to the same period in 2024.

“At the end of June 2025, ECG raised about GHC1.6 billion. That’s a significant leap, even though the goal was GHC2.5 billion,” he noted. “When compared year-on-year, the progress is clear.”

Jinapor also revealed plans to introduce a legislative instrument to Parliament that would impose tougher penalties on individuals who install electricity meters illegally. He explained that current sanctions are not acting as effective deterrents.

“Some offenders have already faced prosecution,” he added, “but the penalties are not strict enough to discourage the practice. We need to strengthen the law.”
