The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a stern warning to the public, cautioning against the unauthorised relocation of electricity meters, describing the act as illegal and subject to prosecution.

According to ECG, all issued meters are registered to specific properties and locations, and moving them without official approval can result in billing disruptions, technical issues, and legal consequences.

Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager of External Communications at ECG, clarified that while some flexibility exists for movable structures, like kiosks and containers, such transfers are only permitted within the same ECG district and must be conducted by ECG authorised personnel.

“A meter tied to a permanent structure like a house cannot be relocated under any circumstance. Doing so violates ECG policy and Ghanaian law,” Dr. Ayiku stated.

He emphasized that anyone caught moving meters without ECG’s permission risks criminal prosecution and urged customers to use official channels when requesting service changes.

ECG further appealed to the public to report any suspicious meter activities through its regional offices or approved communication lines, reaffirming its commitment to safe, reliable, and lawful service delivery.

“We urge all customers to cooperate and help safeguard the integrity of our power distribution system,” Dr. Ayiku added.
