The Electoral Commission (EC) has dismissed calls for an immediate re-run of the 2024 parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North constituency, insisting that results from three polling stations are still pending and must be processed.
The EC announced on Thursday, June 19, during a parliamentary session. Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Affairs, explained that the commission still intends to complete the collation process once security concerns are addressed.
“The situation in Ablekuma North has not yet reached the point where we cannot retrieve the results,” Dr. Asare told Parliament. “Only if those efforts fail will we consider a re-run. That will be our last resort.”
The delay, he noted, stems from the Ghana Police Service awaiting legal advice from the Attorney General’s Department on how best to provide security for the collation exercise.
Meanwhile, Dr. Asare also revealed the cost implications of the 2024 elections. The EC spent GHS 3.6 million to reprint presidential ballots and GHS 2.4 million on parliamentary ballots in the Eastern and Western Regions.
As tensions linger in Ablekuma North, the EC maintains that finalizing the outstanding collation remains its priority, not a fresh vote.
