EC Chair must be a foreigner – Asiedu Nketia

General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia says the Electoral Commission’s (EC) report that the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election was free, fair and violent-free make it seems like they are from a different planet.

He said video evidence and rife media publications, in addition to damning reports by observer groups, narrated how pockets of brutalities were recorded especially at Bawaleshie.

Minister of State in-charge of National Security Bryan Acheampong had said on Citi FM that he deployed some rampaging masked armed men on the day of the polls to Bawaleshie, after security picked intelligence that some NDC supporters were plotting evil at the residence of the NDC candidate, Delali Obrempong.

The EC, chaired by Jean Mensa, said as far as it was concerned, none of its officers at all the 135 polling stations was attacked, neither was the exercise at the polling stations marred by any acts of violence.

Based on this background, it concluded that the Wuogon by-election was clean.

But, Asiedu Nketia told newsman after an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting with the EC that “I don’t know whether this EC was alive in this country. It may be coming from a different world.”

He argued that the assault witnessed on the day was as a result of the sanctioned election by the EC, therefore, it was an electoral violence and the EC could not conclude that the exercise was free, fair and violent free.

He lauded the leadership of the NDC for the swift decision it took to withdraw from the election, in order to avoid further injuries and bloodshed to their party supporters and other unarmed civilians.
