Dumsor: Kokrobite residents beat PDS staff; one injured with cutlass

Angry residents at Kokrobite in the Greater Accra Region have reportedly beaten some staff of the Power Distribution Service (PDS) over the resurgent power cuts in the area.

The PDS staff who were in the area Saturday to restore power to the community were attacked by residents and inflicted machete wounds on one of the workers.

This was disclosed by a communications consultant at the Energy Ministry on Facebook.

Nana Damoah pleaded with the general public to avoid actions of violence against the workers and ensure their safety as they discharge their duties.

He wrote on Facebook, “We plead with all Ghanaians and consumers of power to please be a bit more considerate in their actions. Yesterday, as staff of PDS/ECG worked to restore power to residents around krokrobite, they were attacked and beaten. One of the men working to restore power sustained a cutlass wound on his nose. This is very unfortunate.”

“As various teams are out in the field working to restore power in the problematic areas, please let’s guarantee their safety, so they can deliver for us. It is essential for our own good,” he added.

Since the PDS took over management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in this month, there have been several concerns about the sudden intermittent power outages.

The company has been explaining that the resurgent power crisis is as a result of technical challenges.

PRO of the PDS assured there is enough power for distribution and added that “If we are off, it means that we have announced planned maintenance.”

In a recent statement, they were directed by GRIDCo to shed load 10-hours each day until ongoing construction work on the Pokuase interchange is completed.

They also announced today that “dumsor” experienced in some parts of Accra is due to the heavy rain that caused trees to fall on power transformers.
